About Milan

9. září 2014 v 21:41 | Naomi Munthe |  Clanky jinych autoru
As so many of you are already aware, my Stepdad, Poppa as I liked to call him passed away this Saturday, September 6th. I wanted to take this time to actually write about this special man Milan Rezabek. I had this done last night but just as I was about to post it I lost internet connection, and deep inside I felt like he was even now playing a joke on me in his humorous way. Our family was so extremely fortunate to have him in our lives. There really are no words to express his influence on me and how he changed my life.

It is through his example that I learned to be a better person. He was the most compassionate, generous, kind, and wise man. Always ready to help anyone in need at the drop of a hat, often to great lengths. My earliest memories of my Poppa was as a jovial, big fuzzy teddy bear guy, with a full beard, accompanied by a wide smile and a mischievous twinkle in his eye.

Although he spent over 30 years as a Senior Engineer for Clark County his life long passion was music, Jazz to be specific. He began his career as a young man playing the stand up bass, traveling and performing all over the world with true legends from Dizzy Gillespie to Frank Sinatra. He spent 10 years playing with Wayne Newton, performed at the White House for Gerald Ford, as well as several Monterey Jazz Festivals among hundreds of other performances. His last joy was being able to collaborate and produce several scores with Quincy Jones on his last album.

I will always remember our special bond over music, to the point of sometimes battling who could play their records or cd's louder in the house. When I played my rock and roll, 70's, 80's or in particular Depeche Mode, U2 or the random underground band or punk band he tried to relate and never asked me to turn off what he probably considered garbage. He was a remarkably good man with vast amounts of love for his family. Always committed to taking care of, supporting and providing a comfortable lifestyle. He came into our lives when I was already a snotty teenager entering the high school years. At first the transition, like most new families began with mild enthusiasm. It didn't take long for me to see his love for my Mother and that he a truly had a golden heart.

In those growing years we shared so many wonderful memories, that shaped who I am today. Ever resilient, he was always there to support, guide or bail me out of a difficult situation with the most gentle nature and a big bear hug. We spent many weekends renting horror and sci-fi movies while pigging out on a gallon of mint chip ice cream. When my friends would come over, he always welcomed them with his usual corny jokes and a smile. If my friends and I got rowdy or obnoxious late at night, snacking, baking, or rearranging my room he never said a word. In fact, he rarely raised his voice in angst of my typical teenage behavior. Quite the opposite in fact. His steadfast, unwavering support, and love, made me feel I was capable of conquering anything in this life. He instilled a mountain of confidence that has stuck with me through adulthood. It is because of him, that I learned to believe in myself.

He was a remarkably good and genuine man with vast amounts of care and love for his entire family which extended to Czechoslovakia where he was born. He was committed to taking care of, and providing for his family and would do anything to make you happy. These past few weeks of my Poppa's life were extremely difficult, especially for my Mamasan, who watched a once vibrant, robust man struggle with cancer. It happened so unexpectedly and quickly without any warning. It began three weeks ago, when he became unresponsive at home, and we called for an ambulance. At the hospital after a week of MRI's and extensive xrays etc., they diagnosed him with two brain tumors.

They informed us that they would not operate, and he did not want to go through the extensive trials of chemo at his age. It was then that we were told to prepare for the hospice. He was transferred to the hospice last week and from that point was mostly sleeping through the ordeal. He passed peacefully without any pain and we are so thankful he did not have to suffer.

Thank you Poppa, for being such a loving husband to Mamasan, the best Stepdad/Poppa a girl could wish for, and a great Grandpa/Gigi to Dax. We hold you in our hearts and cherish your memory forever. Naomi, Akiko Munthe-Rezabek, and Dax.

Milan Rezabek zemrel...

6. září 2014 v 23:59 Clanky vzpominkove a recyklovane
Asi pred hodinou, ve 3:30 EST 6. zari 2014 zemrel v Las Vegas Milan Rezabek, umelec, muzikant, osobnost primo renesancni a dobrodruh svetoveho kalibru.

Ovsem cestina, prestoze ji mluvil dobre, uz davno nebyla JEHO jazyk.

Milan byl shooter, too.

Thank you for you service, officer! I salute you! And see you on the other side!

O tomhle zajimavem dilema jsem si nekolikrat povidal s prateli z Ceska - a me nazory nebyly jednoduse brany vazne.

Would You Rather Be Rich In A Poor Country, Or Poor In A Rich Country?

Which is the better lot in life: To be poor in a rich country, or rich in a poor country? Take a guess now, before you read further. You may find the answer surprising.*
Since the financial crisis, "the decline of the West and the rise of the rest" has become a fixture in the thinking of not just Americans, but people all around the world. A 2013 survey by Pew Research Center's Global Attitudes Project showed that 34% of respondents believed that China was the world's leading economic power, up from 20% in 2008.
These respondents were wrong: the US was the world's largest economy in 2013.** But it's easy to see why they might have thought the US had lost its superpower status.
The media abounds with tales of China's stunning economic rise, the gross excessamong the nouveau riche in emerging markets, and the decline of the middle class and rising inequality in the US. As if to rub it all in, Chen Guangbiao, a Chinese recycling tycoon, staged an expensive charity event in Central Park in June where he fed hundreds of American homeless "sesame-seed encrusted tuna and expensive cuts of beef."
So is it better to be rich in a poor country? Unless you are Chen Guangbiao or one of his rare cohorts, the answer is no. Your standard of living is likely to be higher if you live in a rich country, no matter where you fall on the income distribution.
Despite the recent troubles in advanced economies and growth in emerging economies, the gap between rich and poor countries remains large. Even the poorest of Americans, for example, were still richer than 60% of the world's population on a purchasing power parity basis in 2005; they were also roughly on par with China's top 15% and India's top 5%. (Branko Milanovic, the Serbian-American economist, has graphed this data: See below, or check out slide 56 here.)
Screen Shot 2014-08-13 at 2.38.02 PM
Of course, these trends are changing. Economies are "converging," meaning the income levels of both poor and rich countries are coming together, due largely to the rapid transmission of technology from advanced to developing economies. Convergence is a powerful force, perhaps the biggest economic story of the 21st century.
Yet wealth and economic activity remain both incredibly path dependent. They also tend to cluster around global economic centers, which take decades or centuries to establish.
Here's an awesome illustration of that path dependency, created by the G-Econ research project at Yale University, which shows how the world's economic activity is disproportionately clustered in North America and Europe, with vast "cool spots" through Asia, Africa, and South America.
Convergence is a fascinating story. Yet perhaps we've repeated the mantra of change so often that we've forgotten the one of stasis. The truth is that poor countries still have a long way to go towards anything approaching equality.
* Then again, maybe not. You are reading this blog, so it stands to reason that you are very smart, or very lucky.
**In 2014, the answer is less clear. According to the World Bank's InternationalComparison Program, China is set to surpass the US in purchasing power parity-adjusted GDP in 2014. But according to the IMF 's exchange rate figures, the Chinese economy is still half as large as that of the U.S. (In other words, measuring economic activity is far less of an exact science than most people assume.)

To v České republice neplatí!
